2023-03-30 In the good old times, like ~2002 (or before) up to perhaps 2018 or so, there was KDM (KDE display manager) which could be configured to start login screens on multiple VTs starting at a chosen VT number. So we typically had three or four on a desktop computer, starting at VT9: one for the generic 'user', one for me, etc. Then all the plasma rubbish, wayland, etc started. KDM was removed. GDM is pretty awful, as the 'G' strongly implies; what a frightful desktop environment Gnome is .. and the recent ones make the old ones seem almost tolerable. Modern KDE suggests the use of 'SDDM' which has no sign of configuration possibility for multiple sessions, lowest VT number to start from, or even the poor alternative of 'user switching'. Lightdm isn't *so* light as that, but I can't get it to start multiple VTs; fortunately it does allow the lower VT to be set, and simply starts one login session there. In the Centos7 desktop we've put up with 'user switching' for some years. Instead of multiple VTs from the start, we log in to the first, then 'switch user', 'new session' to open another, etc. With the new KDE (now on RHEL9 clones) there isn't a visible option even for user switching. But it can be adjusted based on the following text, by cp -vi /usr/share/kde-settings/kde-profile/default/xdg/kdeglobals /etc/xdg/kdeglobals then vi /etc/xdg/kdeglobals to set action/switch_user=true from: https://unix.stackexchange.com/questions/653940/switch-user-button-on-kde-plasma "The switch user functionality has been broken for some time and it was disabled in Fedora 34, see the blocker bug for details. You can re-enable it by editing /usr/share/kde-settings/kde-profile/default/xdg/kdeglobals and removing/commenting out the [KDE Action Restrictions] section. # HOW: https://develop.kde.org/deploy/kiosk/introduction/ # WHY: https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=1929643 [KDE Action Restrictions] action/start_new_session=false action/switch_user=false " edited Jun 12, 2021 at 9:32 "Correction: It was broken by Wayland. If you still use X11 it works just fine. Yet another feature turned off for everyone just because it's broken in Wayland. As per the bug thread: "So, it apears this bug show itself when we use plasma wayland sessions." Aug 3, 2022 at 8:18
